Neuropathy is a collection of disorders caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system that affects 20 million Americans, usually in people ages 55 and older. Most commonly, neuropathy affects the hands and/or the feet causing a painful burning or tingling sensation.

The most common form of neuropathy is symmetrical polyneuropathy, which mainly affects the feet and legs on both sides of the body. Symptoms can be far-ranging as the sensations may come and go depending on the underlying causes. Among the most common issues associated with neuropathy are diabetes, chemotherapy, prolonged medication use, cholesterol drugs, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, alcoholism and trauma but many cases have an unknown origin.

A complete exam and diagnostic testing that may include laboratory testing, Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies will help diagnose the type and cause of neuropathic conditions and help your neurologist create a treatment plan.

We see patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, sensory neuropathy, motor neuropathy, and diabetic neuropathy.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term disease that attacks the central nervous system and impacts the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. As the nerve fibers deteriorate, MS causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. While not curable, certain strategies can help modify or slow the disease course or improve function and safety.

Treating MS involves the expertise of different healthcare professionals, with the neurologist as the leader of this team.
• Overall Health. Neurologic care is only part of the overall health needs for those with MS. It is important to schedule regular visits with a primary care physician and age-appropriate screening tests. Like the general population, people with MS are subject to medical problems that have nothing to do with the disease.
• Medications. There are more than 12 disease-modifying medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat relapsing forms of MS. They reduce the frequency and severity of relapses (also called attacks or exacerbations), reduce lesions in the brain and spinal cord and may slow the disability for many people with MS.
• Rehabilitation. Cognitive, vocational, physical, occupational and speech therapies are important components of MS treatment at all stages of the disease. The focus is maintaining performance and safety at home and work. Rehabilitation professionals are dedicated to overall fitness and energy management while addressing accessibility and mobility, speech and swallowing, memory and other cognitive functions.
• Emotional Support. Mental health professionals offer support and education, treat depression, anxiety and other mood changes that are common in people with MS. Neuropsychologists assess and treat cognitive problems.

Parkinson’s Disorders are the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the U.S affecting approximately 1 in 300 people. In Parkinson’s patients, 80% or more of dopamine-producing cells which play important roles in functions including motor control degenerate, leading to a loss of dopamine. This results in the clinical symptoms of the disease.

There is no single cause of Parkinson’s although several risk factors have been identified.
Parkinson’s generally manifests in middle to late years of life and men are 1.5 times likely to get Parkinson’s than women. Genetics causes about 10-15% of all Parkinson’s.

Although movement or motor symptoms are the most visible manifestation, Parkinson’s is characterized by a range of other symptoms including:

• Tremor or trembling
• Rigidity, or stiffness of limbs and trunk
• Bradykinesia, or slowness of movement
• Impaired balance and gait
• Apathy, depression
• Loss of sense of smell
• Sleep disorders

Not everyone experiences all the symptoms of Parkinson’s, and if they do, they won’t necessarily experience them in the same order or at the same intensity.Neuro Center AZ provides the latest treatment modalities for both the physical and psychiatric manifestations of this group of disorders.

There are a variety of tremors with varying causes. Diagnosing tremors involves a review of your medical history, family history and symptoms and a physical examination. As diagnoses is often a matter of ruling out other conditions that can cause symptoms, your neurologist may conduct a neurologic exam, laboratory tests and performance testing.

Treatments can include medications to relieve the tremors, physical therapy to improve muscle control and/or a nerve stimulation device for people with essential tremor.

Not only did Dr. Kumar listen to everything I said, she ordered multiple tests to rule out issues I may have rather than just give me medication.
